Erdoğan said that the Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) was notified on the issue “countless times,” but “efforts were delayed,” especially in the country’s east and southeast.
“The raising of generations with knowledge in their minds and faith in their hearts has always been a fearful dream for some. There were those who couldn’t accept religious vocational schools. They were worried that a different generation might emerge. Just for this reason the educational system was turned upside-down. FETÖ used this weakness and became a trouble for our country. I would like to say that our Diyanet has serious deficiencies on this issue,” Erdoğan told students from east and southeast during an event organized by Diyanet in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu on Aug. 5, as he added that “the body was too late.”
“We made these warning from the squares countless times and conveyed them in our private meetings. It was especially late in the efforts in east and southeast,” he also said.
Erdoğan also commented on the trials into the July 15, 2016, failed coup attempt, many believed to have been orchestrated by the followers of the U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, saying that the suspects have been lying in courts.
“They’ve been lying in the trial process. They say ‘It’s not me,’ while the footage is there because lying is legitimate for them. They are also hypocrites and have many lies. They tore the ummah apart like this. However, a lie never lives to be old,” he added.
Görmez resigned few days ago and this is the first time Erdogan talked about it. Görmez’s term didnt end until 2020 however his choosing to resign early triggered a heated discussion even among pro-AKP media and talking heads, some were supporting the decision others thought Görmez should have stayed till his term ends.
