In the report, 78 of these journalists are former employees of Gulen Community media organizations and 30 of them are related with Kurdish media. In addition 11 of these journalists are one of big and rooted newspaper Cumhiyet’s authors, editors and reporters being detained in accusation of “aiding and propagandizing for the Fethullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ)”. And lastly 9 journalists are still in prison charged with being members of illegal organizations and making propaganda of terrorism.
84 of 136 journalists are still under investigation or waiting for their hearings to start after investigations. 19 of them were sentenced to prison where 23 journalists’ cases are still on trial process. In the same period of 2016 only 32 journalists were in prison where 136 journalists are in prison this year according to the report.
18 journalists who were charged with insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan were tried with 90 years in prison; nine of them were sentenced to 4 years, 5 months and 20 days in prison and they were fined 84,000 TL (16,000 Euros) in total. Four other journalists met prison on this ground as convict or suspect.
The report contains only three months April and May and June. According to the report Journalists are being charged many kind of accusations. In general some of them are; involvement in coup attempt, being member of terrorist organizations, defaming the president and etc.
