As of today Turkish government jailed 177 journalist and many of them after last year’s failed coup attempt. Turkish government define them as coupist and terrorist. Turkish president Erdoğan delivered a long speech to media members at the Huber Pavilion at the iftar dinner on Sunday. During his speech President Erdogan said they didn’t forget the jailed journalists and added “Some organizations in the West come and tell us the same thing all the time: ’ There are many detained journalists in your prisons’. Today in our country, I’ll tell you the statistics of our ministry which shows only two of the 177 detained people who expressed their profession as journalists have yellow press card (Editor’s note: All journalist lost their yellow cards once they are jailed). One of these 177 people is in prison for murder, others for their involvement in terrorist organizations.”
Within the scope of the case, the public prosecutor’s office prosecuted Ahmet Altan, Mehmet Altan and Nazlı Ilıcak three times aggravated jail time for life by charges of “attempt to overthrow the constitutional order” “attempt to overthrow the government of the Republic of Turkey” and “attempt to overthrow the Turkish Grand National Assembly” and additionally demanded 15 years of imprisonment for helping a terrorist organization without becoming a member.
The evidence shown for Ahmet Altan were the news published in closed Taraf daily newspaper in the period when he was the editor in chief of the newspaper, three column writings and his comments on a television program which he joined on July 14th. His HTS records and witness statements also included.
The evidence shown for Mehmet Altan also were two column writings and a TV program which he joined to Ahmet Altan and Nazli Ilicak.
Nazlı Ilıcak after the judge recited the indictment said; she was very happy to be able to defend herself on the court 11 months later. She defended herself by starting to explain her background and who she was.
Nazli ilicak, according to journalist Milena Buyum who was at the trial and tweeted, said: “It is not possible for my father, my mother, I to be associated with religious group. I experienced the pain of the May 27th coup (1960) myself at the age of 16… To be unfair and defend the unfairness is extremely wrong. I never obeyed or served anyone, I always acted as a free individual…I come from the Democrat Party school. I backed Demirel at that times. But I never fully obeyed; I criticized Demirel, who was integrated and supported postmodern -coup on February 28th , 1997…. While all the TVs were banging against Erdogan, I defended the religious people and Erdogan, and I was being battered after postmodern coup on 28th February, 1997… In the 367 resolution, when they try to close Erdogan’s party, also during Sledgehammer, Ergenekon trials, I always supported the AKP. There was a military tutelage, which was blocking AKP… I cut my support to the government after December 17-25, 2013 corruption cases. When I wrote on my column at the Sabah daily newspaper as “This matter should be enlightened,” they fired me… Zaman and Bugun daily newspapers offered me a job. Based on recommendation of Mehmet Barlas and Abdullah Gul, I choose to work for Bugun daily newspaper. I got no other offer from elsewhere. I would go to Hürriyet if an offer from Aydın Doğan had come. I am the last person to be associated with the “FETO”. That does not match to my life style or world view… The fact that the corruption cases were closed without going to the court has disturbed me. One can call them as “Plot”. We can also say they were “FETÖ”s plots, but the cases left in darkness, caused trouble for our country…. The indictment says you have no organic connection to the terrorist organization, but you have been aware of the coup. Where am I supposed to know?… You say that I talked to Harun Tokak. Harun Tokak was president of GYD. Guess who else has meet with Harun Tokak? All government members … How could I know if Harun Tokak was a terrorist? Why did not the state arrest him? How about Akın Ipek? Who else has meet him?… When did I talk to Harun Tokak, what about did I talk to? I wish you had listened to phone talks of “the members of the terrorist organization” and I. You would have know what about we talked… I am being sentenced to life imprisonment three times; The evidence shown is; me playing snowball with Zekeriya Öz.”
