Special police units raided the houses of academician Nuriye Gülmen and the teacher Semih Özakça who went on a hunger strike for 74 days because they were dismissed from their job by a statutory decree (SD). Gülmen and Özakça, who had a judicial control call, were taken into custody by the house raid just after the day they gave their signatures to the police station by that call.
Esra Özakça, the wife of Semih Özakça, who made live broadcasts during the raid, reacted to the police trying to enter the house.
She told them as followings; “When did you call them in the day time and they didn’t come? These people today went to give their signatures of judicial control.”
Lawyer Selçuk Kozağaçlı reacted to the raid by these words from his personal Twitter account; “We know these raids very well. They murder or mutilate people by calling it ‘Return to Life’. They got a detention call for Nuriye Gulmen and Semih Özakça and a search warrant for their home. These people want their job back. We know what it is to raid to the houses of Nuriye and Semih, who were on a hunger strike for 75 days and made a statement at Yüksel Street every single day.”
He continued as: “Semih and Nuriye have greetings for everybody. They are tired but well. They were quite battered. We gave water and sugar but if the detention period is extended, both of them will be cut off. They said ‘we will not bow to such an injustice’.”
Claim of ‘Gezi and TEKEL Protests’
In the statement made by the Law Bureau of People’s Twitter account, it was suggested that the reason for the detention is “to support Gezi and TEKEL protests”.
