Turkish President of Religious Affairs Met Sanctioned Cleric who is accused of supporting Al Qaeda

President of Turkish Religious Affairs Mehmet Gormez accepted a committee of Iraqi Muslim Scholars. The committee was led by Muthana Harith Al-Dari (Müsenna Haris Ed Dari) who is on the sanctions list of the United Nations for providing support to Taliban and Al-Qaeda, Turkish Secular Daily Sözcü reported.

Al-Dari who is on the sanction list of UN Security Council since 2010, had a meeting with Mr. Gormez. Al-Dari name was added to the ban list with accusations of supporting Al-Qaeda and Taliban and cooperating with Osama Bin Laden. His name has been on the list since then.

Gormez mentioned that he knew Al-Dari

News of the meeting took place on May 5th, photos of the meeting were also on the official website of Iraq Muslim Scholars Committee. Gormez who expressed his respects to the scholar told that he knew Al-Dari intimately and expressed appreciation for his work in Iraq.

Gormez stated that Al-Dari’s prediction that the political process in Iraq would be unsuccessful. He also said that people who opposed to him and considered him as an extremist, are in fact accepting that he was right with his analysis and opinions.

Turkey had to comply with the sanctions

Al-Dari is still in UN Security Council Sanctions Committee’s “Individual Targeted Sanctions List” with no QDI.278. Following accusations were listed for Al-Dari who was added to the list on March 25, 2010:
Cooperating with Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, and Taliban, contributing to the financing of these groups and planning of Al-Qaeda Iraq activities, sending weapons and recruiting manpower to the groups.

Al-Dari is also on the USA Department of Treasury wanted list and is sanctioned by the UK Government.
