Imprisoned Mafia leader’s adapted son released from jail after confusing people with orange clothes as Dutch staff

The court released Onur Ozbizerdik, the son of the ultra-nationalist and one of the leading mobs of the Turkish underworld Alaattin Cakici, who was arrested for shooting at a nightclub which he said he thought was the Netherland’s consulate.

Ozbizerdik at court claimed that he was unfocused and under the influence of medication when he started shooting. Mr. Ozberdik said that he decided to fire shots at a group of people wearing orange clothes and talking on walkie-talkies thinking that the place was the Consulate of Netherlands. He said, only after the effects of the drug worn off, he realized that he shot at the wrong place.

Ozbizerdik was arrested for “causing widespread panic by firing a gun in public place” and illegal use of a concealed weapon.

According to earlier reports, Özbizerdik made interesting statements in his defense at the Istanbul 8th Criminal Court:

“There was a [political] dispute between Turkey and Netherlands, and because of this situation, I was morose. Especially their rude attitude against our female minister was very terrible. The situation irked me. I want to fire my weapon at the Dutch consulate, but I was under the influence of drugs, and because of that I could not shoot at the Dutch embassy.”

Ozbizerdik has claimed that under the effect of the drug he was unfocused and that when he saw people with orange clothes and walkie-talkies he decided to shoot thinking that it was the consulate of the Netherlands. He said that after the effects of the medicines were gone, he had noticed that he shot at the wrong place.

The court decided to release defendant Özbizerdik citing that the evidence had been gathered and that the detention was only a precautionary measure. The court postponed the hearing to a later date.
