Police Officer Sentenced to $3500 Fine for Killing Uğur Kurt

The police officer who killed Uğur Kurt in the front yard of a Cemevi -worship place for Alawites- in İstanbul, was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment for involuntary manslaughter. The sentence was later reduced to 12,000 YTL -about USD 3,500- fine.

Uğur Kurt was killed by the police officer during a ceremony held in the Cemevi for Berkin Elvan –a teenager killed during the Gezi protests by a police tear gas capsule- and the victims of Soma mine disaster.

Defendant police office Sezgin Kormak had been released by the court pending the trial.

During the hearing, Serkan Korkmaz said he regrets killing Uğur Kurt. He continued to say: “We are police officers, but at the end of the day we are flesh and bone too. I feel very sorry for what happened. I didn’t mean to leave a wife husbandless and a kid fatherless. I wish we could reverse time but [impossible]. I am ready for any kind of punishment. I just want to say to his family that I didn’t kill him wittingly.”

Uğur Kurt’s wife reacted to the verdict, shouting “What will I tell to my son. Judge! I hope the same thing happens to you.”
