‘Some MHP deputies might enter the cabinet.’
It was suggested that Mr. Binali Yıldırım, the current prime minister of Turkey, has offered his resignation from the position of party chairman following the constitutional referendum. It has also been claimed that Mr. Yildirim offered the party chairmanship to the Turkish President Mr. Erdogan saying “Obstacles for you being the party chairman has been removed after the acceptance of the constitutional amendment.”
If Erdoğan decides to hold an unscheduled party congress, he may become the chairman of the ruling AKP as soon as in May. The revision of the cabinet positions will be determined after the Party Congress depending on the changes in the MKYK (Central Decision Executing Committee).
Some executives in the AKP want some MHP deputies to hold cabinet positions to help guarantee a victory in the 2019 elections.
It was also speculated that President Erdogan waiting until the scheduled Party Congress to become the chairman of the party would create a dual structure. Some AKP leaders thought it would be useful for the president to be the general chairman of the party since in the next two years Turkey will hold a local election and a presidential election.
Party Congress in May
According to the party’s rules, the party chairman, MKYK or parliamentarians can suggest an unscheduled party congressional decision.
The party congress could be held on the 13th, 14th of May, or on the 20th and 21st of May according to backroom gossip. After Mr. Erdoğan resumes his chairmanship, it was suggested, that Mr. Yıldırım will continue to serve as the group chairman and prime minister until the presidential elections.
Erdoğan had said that he would return to the party as soon as possible. Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ announced that Erdoğan could register as a member of the AKP after the official outcome of the referendum.
Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım gave the signal that he might make a cabinet revision today and said he would consult with Erdoğan.
