Turkish FM Accuses Fmr US Attorney Bharara for having “close ties” with terrorist organization

Turkey expects the United States to take concrete steps on the extradition of U.S.-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, who is accused of masterminding the July 2016 failed coup attempt, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on March 30 during the press briefing with visiting US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Cavusoglu said, during his last visit to Washington last week, conveyed the information on Gulen extradtion to new US Attorney General.

Speaking at a joint news conference with visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Çavusoglu said Washington should take administrative steps including the temporary detention of Gülen.

Turkish Foreign Minister accuses Fmr US Attorney Bharara as “FETO supporter”

Speaking about arrest of the largest Turkish public bank, Halbank’s top executive in the U.S., Cavusoglu accused former US Attorney of the South District of New York Preet Bharara as “having close ties with the FETO.”

Turkish government recognizes “FETO” as terrorist organization, the followers of US based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Cavusoglu said: “Unfortunately Halkbank’s top executive was arrested in the U.S. As of yesterday, he was able to access to the Turkish Consular Services in New York. We are following the process very closely. But we need to go back to the past of this business. Bharara who launched this business.. We see this, including Zarrab, as a political case. Because former US Attorney Bharara has close ties with FETO, including even the Judge (Richard Berman) who came to Turkey  and participated some political meetings. Bharara, on the other hand, retweeting everything against Turkey on the social media or liking them. And this last arrest conducted on the case Bharara launched. We of course conveyed our concerns and thoughts with the American counterparts on this case. Today also our president (Erdogan), Prime Minster and myself shared these concerns with Mr. Tillerson. We will follow closely this process.”

Imprisoned US Pastor Brunson

On the case of US Pastor Andrew Brunson, he was “not arrested due to his work but due to his own interpreter’s complaint about him. In this process, he has consular access, he can meet with his wife, family and whatever the books he wants, including holy bible.. we always have been helpful and will continue to help. Prosecutor’s office is about to finish the indictment. After indictment completed, we also have independent courts and they will decide on him. Here not the police or judiciary but his own interpreter’s complaint began the process. We also wait courts to decide soon. This is not a political process or against US. We shared how this started. We always provide administrative help.”

Turkish FM Furious over US Partnership with YPG

Turkish FM Cavusoglu repeatedly called YPG as terrorist organization and expressed Turkey’s sorrow over US partnership with YPG forces in Syria.

We can fight together against Daish. We were together as anti-Daish coalition in Washington last week. We, as a NATO and 68 coalition members cannot defeat 10, 20 thousand member terrorist organization Daish and we need one terrorist organization (YPG) to defeat another terrorist organization (Daish) then we need to look at ourselves.”

Secretary Tillerson has not mentioned at all about YPG during on his party of opening statement.

When asked about Raqqa operation, Secretary only said Raqqa will be given to local people at the end.

In his second question, again regarding to Raqqa, Tillerson did not mention about YPG at all, only said there are options that are being considered.

Tillerson, when asked about policy differences over YPG, said there are no differences against Daish with Turkey. About tactics, Tillerson said, that’s where coalition members sit and talk and discussions continue. “These options will continue to be discussed and there are difficult options to choose” added Tillerson, again without mentioning YPG at all.

Assad Issue

When asked about the fate of President Assad, Tillerson said, “longer status of President Assad will be decided by Syrian people.”

Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu has chosen not to comment on President Assad.

“We are sharing same goal for against Iran”

Tillerson said both countries “sharing the goal to decrease the effects of Iran’s destructive policies in the region.”
