Turkey’s upcoming referendum has polarised society both inside and outside the country as the ruling Justice and Development (AKP) Party continues employing a rhetoric accusing those voting against the reform “terrorists”.
The 18-article reform will give the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sweeping executive powers, which the government claims will strengthen the country’s resolve against all its enemies.
A group calling itself the the ‘European No Platform’ formed to organise the vote against the constitutional reform released a statement condemning the attack.
“The dictator in the palace [Erdogan] and the fascist AKP-MHP mob cannot scare us with these attacks. We are going to work even more for a ‘no’ vote in the referendum,” the group said, calling on everyone with a vote to vote in support of “democracy, freedom and equality,” against the change.
People gathered outside the Turkish consulate in Brussels to protest the attack.
