Since the July 15 coup attempt, 236 asylum requests have been made to Greece from Turkey.
According to Deutsche Welle’s report from the Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini, 98 of the 236 asylum claims arrived in the first two months of 2017.
The number of Turks who applied to Greece for asylum was 41 in 2014 and 42 in 2015.
It is stated that the asylum office of Greece keeps only the list of are officially registered refugee candidates, so the actual number may be much higher.
After the coup attempt, eight Turkish soldiers fled to Greece and the demand from Turkey for the return of troops led to tension between the two countries. The final decision about the soldiers is expected to be announced in April, 2017.
