Erdogan says there is no journalist jailed in Turkey but “they’re all thieves, child abusers and terrorists”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today was pushing back some of criticism with regards to Turkey being the top jailer of journalists in the world. According to Erdogan, there is no journalist in Turkish jails due to their journalistic activities but they all are “thieves, child abusers and terrorists.”

Erdogan’s full quote on journalists from today’s speech follows:

“You will call the President of the Turkish Republic a “dictator.” We will not do anything. Are we not supposed to interfere or use our right to go to the judiciary against those who insult the presidents of my country? Let us at least be able to use this right. I’m always on the lookout for criticism but never for defamation. We are saying ‘give us the list of all the journalists who are jailed.’ I’m looking at it, they’re all thieves, child abusers and terrorists. I recently received a list of 149 people. I’m looking at your list of crimes, which include bringing bombs from northern Iraq into our country or being guilty of an armed attack against a police vehicle. Another crime is being caught with explosives. These crimes go on to include even robbing an election bureau of a bank. Of all these charges on the list, 144 relate to terror and 4 relate to crimes. You make and send this list to me that has nothing to do with journalism.”
