Released Chairman of Syriac Association Aktaş: Nobody can expel us from our lands

Mardin Syriac Association Chairman Yuhanna Aktas house was raided by police and he detained on 16th March, 2017. Dogan Haber Agency reported that many electronic items belonging to Aktas, who were taken to the Directorate of Midyat Anti-Terrorism Branch, also were confiscated.

Mardin Syria Association was shut down by a Presidential decree earlier.

Within the scope of a terrorist investigation conducted by the Mardin Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, police officers searched the house. The police confiscated some documents and detained Yuhanna Aktas on claim of being a member of the PKK. Because of the confidentiality decision on the investigation file, Aktas was not allowed to meet with his lawyers. Aktaş is nephew of  Midyat Turabidin Metropolitan Samuel Aktaş.

Meanwhile, It was stated that many others were detained during the operations were carried out regarding upcoming Newroz celebration on 21st March. 

Mr. Aktaş released a day later and said the reason for his arrest is ”intimidation, pressure policies. Nobody can browbeat us, or expel us from our lands.”
