Possible Outcomes of Turkish-Dutch Crisis?

The present crisis between Turkey and the Netherlands has the potential to exacerbate threats and actions made by officials in both countries. Turkish politicians have reiterated that the country will take “strong counter measures.” At this point, there is an important question: Are Turkish politicians who threaten the Dutch with sanctions assessing how Turkey will influence the counter measures to be imposed by the Netherlands?
The Turkish-Dutch trade volume hovers around 6.5 billion dollars. While this amount might not be very significant for the Dutch economy, it is important as the Turkish economy faces a crisis.
Of Turkey’s foreign investors, the Netherlands stands out as one of its biggest investors, with total inflows of roughly 22 billion dollars, constituting 15.8 percent of direct investment made in Turkey.
This diplomatic row could also lead to a decrease in the number of arrivals from Europe to Turkey, as tourists from the Netherlands represent one of Turkey’s largest markets in the tourism industry. The number of arrivals from Europe reached 19.4 million in 2014, making it the region that sends the most tourists to Turkey. However, the number of European tourists declined to 13.1 billion in 2016 and has continued to decrease going into 2017. This fall may worsen the present situation of the Turkish tourism sector, which is already in crisis.
Alarm bells are ringing for Turkish Navy
The Turkish Navy could be adversely affected by a possible arms embargo, which can be implemented by the Netherlands. Most of Turkey’s modern warships are equipped with electronic systems – command control systems, air/surface search radar, fire control radar, electrooptic systems and close-in weapon systems – that are Dutch in origin. The list of these systems is below.

As is seen, sanctions to be imposed by the Netherlands may have serious implications for the Turkish Navy in addition to the crisis the country is currently going through. The words spoken by politicians for their own political ambitions could do unexpected harm to their country.
