Deported Turkish Minister, banned by EU, coming to New York Turkish Consulate

Turkey’s Family Affairs Minister Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya is announced to meet with “Turkish citizens” in Turkey’s New York Consulate on March 14th, Tuesday.

Minister Kaya was not allowed to visit Turkish Consulate in Rotterdam over the weekend. Minister Kaya took land route to Rotterdam Turkish Consulate when Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s landing permit revoked by Netherlands’ Prime Ministry. Dutch authorities accused Turkish Minister for “lying” and “deceiving.”

Turkish Minister Kaya may be the first and only Turkish Minister who is banned and deported by a foreign country.

Minister is declared as “persona non-grata” and ban is valid for all of EU countries.

Under Turkish law (High Election Council’s 109 number decree) campaigning abroad is illegal. The Turkish elections authority also confirmed a ban on “all forms of propaganda” abroad in a Feb. 15 statement this year on the upcoming referendum.

Even though the announcement made by Turkish Consulate Twitter Account does not tell the reason of gathering, there is no reason to assume the meeting by Minister Kaya and unnamed Turkish MPs have no purpose other than referendum.
