HDP’s Zana is facing up to 20 years imprisonment

HDP Ağrı MP Leyla Zana is facing up to twenty years imprisonment for three different offenses.

The indictment prepared by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office about Zana was accepted into the 5th High Penal Court. Thus, Zana was prosecuted for eight years to 20 years in prison for ‘membership in a terrorist organization’, ‘unlawful participation in unlawful meetings and marching unlawfully,’ and ‘praising crime and criminals’.

Accusation of PKK propaganda

It was claimed that Democratic Society Congress(DTK) was founded by instructions of PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan and Zana was using it for PKK’s organizational work.

Zana claimed to have participated in the PKK’s funeral, and during the Newroz event, which was banned, in Diyarbakir in 2012 made propaganda for the PKK.  It was claimed that the crowd during Newroz event did not disperse despite the warning, “Zana raised her fingers and made a victory sign in the style of being a propaganda for the organization.  Because of that, although the suspect is not a member of a terrorist organization, it is understood that she committed crimes on behalf of the organization and opposed to the Article 32 § 1 of Law No. 2911.”

‘She praised Ocalan’

It was claimed that Zana participated in the campaign of World Women’s Day on March 8, 2012 in Yenişehir district of Diyarbakir and praised Öcalan in her speech: “Zana in her speech said ’ You will bring your president back among us with your brilliant brains and your great resistance. I have no doubt about it.’ It has been understood that Zana has committed the act of praising “Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the terrorist organization responsible for the death of 30,000 people, and she said that he is a public leader who should be accepted, possessed and respected.”
