Mayor of Ağrı Sırrı Sakık removed from office, last DPB Mayor

Mayor of Ağrı Sırrı Sakık, member of the DPB (Pro-Kurdish Democratic Regions Party) removed from office and governor of Ağrı Musa Işın appointed as the trustee by the Ministry of Interior on Wednesday. Sakık had been serving as the mayor of Ağrı since June 1, 2014. Vice Mayor Ömer Polat and 5 municipal council members had been removed from their posts one month ago. Numbers of municipalities taken away from elected mayors of the DPB exceed 80 so far.

After his removal Sakık tweeted as: “I was removed from the office of mayor that I had been serving for three years. With my colleagues we managed to make Ağrı the most peaceful city of Turkey during the course of my term of office. Our conscience is clear. 23 years ago we had been taken away from the parliament and pushed out of the democratic arena. Today history repeats itself with all sins. However we will build peace eventually on this land whatever the cost may be.”
