Turkish Justice Minister in pursue of extradition of Gulen wants to talk with AG Jeff Sessions

Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ on Gülen’s extradition: the US has more information about him than we do

“All documents related to the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016 are now available to the US Department of Justice”

Turkey’s Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ spoke out about Gülen’s extradition. Bozdağ said, “All documents related to the prosecution of Fethullah Gülen are now at the US Department of Justice. However, the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETÖ) has continued its operations against Turkey, with the US knowing about their activities. The authorities in the US have more information than we do on Fethullah Gülen’s involvement in the failed coup attempt.”

When asked about the letter he sent to recently-appointed Attorney General Jeff Sessions requesting the extradition of Fethullah Gülen, Bozdağ said, “There is a difference between the approach of Trump’s administration and the previous administration on this issue. The previous administration claimed this is a legal issue, and they would refer us to the Department of Justice. The new administration also says that this is a legal issue, however, they do agree and emphasize that we need to collaborate more than before. We see this as a positive step forward.”

“I might go to the US”

“Right after the new Attorney General took office, we sent a letter and requested to have a phone call. I hope to explain this while on the phone with the new Attorney General. We will have the opportunity to meet each other. Ministry officials have sent a note to their ambassadors to reconsider and reevaluate this issue. If necessary, I may go to the US again to discuss this matter with the Attorney General. I will invite Mr. Sessions to Turkey as well, and we can talk about it here. This is extremely important in terms of developing relations between the two countries.”

“They haven’t sent the documents to court”

All documents related to July 15 are now available to the US Department of Justice. Although they say that this is a legal issue, they still haven’t sent the documents to court, even though we asked them to do so. We will respect this decision. Fethullah Gülen continues to manage the organization from his property in Pennsylvania and through the media and his visitors. He continues to operate against Turkey with full freedom, even though the US authorities – who we consider a friend and ally – know about his activities.

We have expressed very clearly that this escalates anti-Americanism here in Turkey. We expressed that there is no difference between Osama and Fethullah Gülen. It is not acceptable for terrorist organizations that have taken the lives of innocent people to continue their operations. This situation will severely harm US-Turkey relations. At present, there is anti-US sentiment in Turkey. We know for sure that authorities in the US have more information than we do on Fethullah Gülen’s involvement in the failed coup. We would be too naive to think that such an organization is not followed by US intelligence. “
