Everyone is silencedFerhat Encü, the HDP Deputy for Sirnak has been detained again on Saturday, just two days after being released following a lengthy spell in detention awaiting trial in two separate cases.
Speaking before his re-arrest, HDP Şırnak Deputy Ferhat Encü said, “The fact that even the indictments of the executives and authors of the Cumhuriyet Newspaper have not been prepared is a proof that there is nothing to prepare. In that respect, everyone who defends peace, freedom and pluralism in the country is considered a threat. This government still maintains this attitude that we saw from the inside. It is nonsense that the co-chairs of the municipalities, the co-president of our party, the Cumhuriyet writers and the executives are in custody. They are being kept inside [prisons] without any justification.”
Isolation in prison
Encu said that the prison conditions are particularly difficult for everyone, especially for those who enter prison for the first time, “As one of the first to be arrested, it has been tough for me. But we know that we are not guilty. The solidarity that our people showed us has given us great strength and morale. For this reason, we have suffered a great deal of trouble in prison. And we were all on our own. We were under isolation,” he said.
Encu emphasized that arrest of all those who raise their voices in the country has been a source of further worry for those in prison.
Trial of the people of Roboski
Encu stated that the inhabitants of Roboski have been under pressure during recent times, and investigations that have been waiting in the files for years have been turned into a trial within a few months, with lawsuits filed against over 40 Roboski citizens. Encu also spoke of how associations have been shut down, and families prevented from conducting memorials at cemeteries or making press statements, describing these as very worrying.
Encu said: “The detention of dissidents, especially the operations against the HDP and DBP in this process, are part of an initiative to ensure the referendum results in a “yes” vote. An operation to change public perceptions is being carried out against our Party.
“They want to prevent Kurds from voting and acting on their will. Because they want to create a perception that ‘the Kurds have abandoned the HDP’. Kurds will vote on the policies and attacks of the AKP government over the last one and a half years, against Kurdish nature, culture, city and the Kurds themselves. Because the Kurds are political and are a community in possession of their own will. Not only the Kurds but all the democratic parts of society in Turkey will do so.”
Daily Evrensel reported that HDP MP Encu’s lawyers so far have been unable to get any information with regards to Mr. Encu’s location. Turkish authorities are reluctant to give to which prison has has been taken
