A Turkish Veterinary Professor appointed as the dean of the Faculty of Medicine due to purges

Erol Ayaz, a Professor of Veterinary Medicine, has been appointed as the dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Abant İzzet Baysal (AİBÜ) in Bolu.

Following the failed coup attempt on the 15th of July 2016, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) ordered heads of university faculties across the country to resign. According to a statement from YÖK, the decision led to the resignation of 1,577 deans including 1,176 from public universities and 401 from foundation universities.

The YÖK did not give a reason behind the decision made by the educational body but resignations have been sought at both state and privately run universities.

Some deans have returned to their duties, while others have been replaced by YÖK appointed candidates. Many people have reacted to the appointments on social media.

Following YOK’s statement demanding the resignation of the heads of university faculties, Prof. Dr. Hayrettin Öztürk, dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Abant İzzet Baysal (AİBÜ) in Bolu, has resigned.

Professor Ayaz, who was the former Director of the Experimental Animal Research and Application Center, has been appointed in Ozturk’s place as the new dean of the Faculty of Medicine by YÖK. The decision has been heavily criticized by social media users.
