Former leadership candidates of the Turkish Nationalist Party (MHP), Meral Aksener, Umit Ozdag, Koray Aydin and Sinan Ogan -who were dispelled from the party before the general assembly, joined forces to carry out a “no” campaign during the referendum period. The bloc announced that they would have their first major meeting in Ankara, on February 18th. Their slogan for the campaign announced as “Turkish Nationalists are saying NO.” MHP representatives who voted “No” for the Constitutional Amendment Bill at the Grand National Assembly are also expected to join the movement.
Meral Akşener, Ümit Özdağ, Koray Aydin and Sinan Oğan, contenders for the leadership of MHP before being dismissed from the party, announced their “NO” campaign for the referendum on the constitutional amendment proposal. Opponents formed the “Nationalist Front, ” and the “Turkish Nationalists are Saying NO Committee” and will hold their first meeting on February 18th in Ankara. According to Cumhuriyet, they are expecting a broad participation including some MHP representatives and ex-Idealist Hearths members.
In opposition to the “YES” campaign of the MHP Chairman and the upper echelon of the party, the dissidents founded the “Turkish Nationalists say NO Committee.” This meeting was the first get-together for Meral Akşener, Koray Aydin, Sinan Oğan and Ümit Özdağ in months. MHP parliamentarians Ismail Ok, Nuri Okutan, Atila Kaya and Yusuf Halaçoğlu, who all voted “no” for the motion, also announced their intentions to join the committee.
