Turkey plans to grant citizenship to 10,000 Syrians in the next month

On Jan 30, columnist Tolga Sardan wrote in Milliyet newspaper that, “according to official statistics, there are almost 3 million Syrian refugees in Turkey. 10 percent of these live in 26 different refugee camps and the rest are spread among 81 Turkish cities. President Erdogan announced last July in Kilis that Turkish citizenship will be granted to Syrian refugees.

“According to Turkish sources, the names of candidates for Turkish citizenship have been sent to governorates. Names that pass examination at the governors’ offices will be sent to the National Intelligence Organization (MIT) in Ankara for further examination.

“Initially, citizenship will be granted to 10 thousand Syrians. After vetting for national security concerns, the names of those eligible will be sent to cabinet ministers for final approval. If citizenship is granted on time, these new citizens will be able to vote in the referendum on constitutional changes scheduled for April.”
