Mandatory defense lawyer appointed for Gulen

The Izmir ‘FETO’ case, which opened yesterday at the Izmir Şakran Prison Facility continues today. It was learned that 30 lawyers, including the lawyer for Pennsylvania-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, the accused mastermind of the failed July 15 coup, submitted letters of resignation removing themselves from the case prior to the second hearing of the case.

According to reporting by Banu Sen of Hurriyet, “An attorney was appointed by the Izmir Bar Association according to the rules of the Criminal Procedure Law (CMK) for Fetullah Gulen. Gulen is the primary defendant in the indictment, which is in part of a trial related to the FETO coup attempt, and has been arrested in absentia.”

The appointed lawyer will withdraw from case by applying to the court delegation by filling a petition.

Additionally, it was reported that lawyers appointed for 30 additional defendants related to this case have resigned by submitting petitions asking to be removed from the case.
